Nutritional Yeast is an inactive dried yeast commonly produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It has a naturally savoury, nutty and mildly cheese-like flavour, making it a popular seasoning and ingredient in plant-based and everyday cooking.
Unlike Baker’s Yeast, Nutritional Yeast has been deactivated and therefore does not function as a leavening agent or make dough rise.

Please Note:
Nutritional Yeast is an inactive or deactivated yeast and should not be confused with Baker’s Yeast, which contains live yeast used for fermentation and bread making.
Nutritional Yeast should also not automatically be treated as identical to Brewer’s Yeast or Yeast Extract. These products can differ in production method, flavour and nutritional composition.
The exact nutrient profile of Nutritional Yeast varies considerably according to the yeast strain, growing medium, processing method and whether additional vitamins and minerals have been added.
Vitamin B12 should only be claimed if it is confirmed on the supplier specification or nutritional analysis.
Unfortified Nutritional Yeast should not automatically be described as a reliable source of Vitamin B12.
Vitamin B12 is frequently added to fortified Nutritional Yeast products during manufacturing. Fortified Nutritional Yeast can provide significant amounts of Vitamin B12, but the quantity varies substantially between brands and formulations.
The same applies to other B vitamins. Fortified products can contain much higher quantities of Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6 and Folate than unfortified Nutritional Yeast.
If vitamins have been added, they must be included in the final ingredient declaration where required.
Specific claims such as “high in protein,” “high in fibre,” “rich in Vitamin B12” or “high in B vitamins” should only be made when the nutritional analysis of the Faria Wholefoods product meets the applicable requirements for those claims.
Although Nutritional Yeast contains protein, the exact amount varies significantly between products and should not be stated as a fixed percentage without product-specific nutritional analysis.
Yeast cell walls contain beta-glucans, particularly beta-(1→3) and beta-(1→6)-glucans. However, research involving purified or concentrated yeast beta-glucan preparations should not automatically be applied to ordinary servings of Nutritional Yeast.
Nutritional Yeast should therefore not be promoted as a treatment or cure for infections, immune disorders, high cholesterol, diabetes or other medical conditions.
People who are sensitive or allergic to yeast should avoid Nutritional Yeast.
Nutritional Yeast is naturally dairy-free when it contains only yeast and permitted added vitamins, despite its cheese-like flavour. However, a vegan, gluten-free, allergen-free or dairy-free label claim should only be made after confirming the actual ingredients, manufacturing controls and possible cross-contamination for the Faria Wholefoods product.
Nutritional Yeast is primarily a savoury food ingredient and seasoning that can form part of a varied and balanced diet.
